• Mr. M Karthikeyan, Chairman and Promoter of Southern Group of Companies, is a Commerce graduate with post-graduation in business management and has done a Law degree. He is also a qualified marine Radio Officer.

• Mr. Karthikeyan has worked with prestigious institutions like Essar Ship Management Services; Univan Ship Management Company, Hong Kong; Blue Marine Ship Management and Trading Services; Chettinad Ship Management Services. Also involved in the implementation of ISM Audit activities in all UNIVAN and Chettinad vessels.

• He is ably assisted by a team of Professionals and faculty to run the business.

INFRASTRUCTURE:-

Located in Panapakkam, an hour’s drive from Chennai, on the Chennai - Calcutta National Highway (NH 05), our state of the art institute set in a sprawling 14 acres of land boasts of excellent infrastructure that comprises of excellent training facilities for students that are truly sophisticated and world class and most important, the experienced faculties promise a most fulfilling learning experience.

CLASSROOMS:-

Our well ventilated and acoustically designed classrooms inspire learning. The spacious classrooms are air-conditioned and equipped with video projectors, overhead projectors and slide projectors. Audio and visual aids are used regularly for teaching with the latest maritime safety / familiarization video cassettes CD's and slides that adds value to both teaching and learning process.

There is a full-fledged building constructed and maintained by 3 site engineers and 17 members including assistant engineers, supervisors and workmen altogether 20. All the individual departments have adequate number of LCD projectors and OHPs. These are under regular service contracts and periodical inspection is carried out by suppliers.

Digital Library :

Keeping pace with the advancements in technology and the need for automated library management system a digital library has been established. Computer-based library service was introduced as early as 2001. The digital library consists of 46 computer terminals with online access facilities through this system E-journals that are published around the globe can be browsed. The digital library is well stocked with various CDs that have audio visual presentation on technical concepts.

Internet

Our College has 200 Mbps Internet connection(leased Line) locally networked & connected through Fiber Optic Cables.The central Library server is available for students for their study Purpose. It also gives access to e-books,study materials,previous question papers,daily circulars,etc. through college Local Area Network. Internet facilities in the well-equipped internet lab provide high speed of connectivity so that, the students can surf the net to gather unlimited information.

Wi-fi facility in the Institution Campus is a milestone in the history of this institution as it puts the college on the road to paperless administration and functioning. With this added specifications, the college offers internet and intranet access to all students and staff for instructional purpose on par with colleges of international repute.

Water Sewage Treatment Plant

Water is the basic necessity of life used for many purposes. So, recycling water is necessary. Considering this in our mind, we have established an Sewage treatment plant in our SAMS College of Engineering and technology college with the assistance of our Civil Department faculty. The treated water is utilized properly for watering the plants throughout the campus and also for irrigation purposes!

TRAINING ACCESSORIES:- We are well equipped with all the training accessories and modern gadgets that help the students to understand the subject both scientifically and practically. Some of our training accessories include: World maps, photographs of ships & ports, Morse key, flags semaphore, seamanship laboratory, barometer, sextant, gyrocompass & magnetic compass, chronometer, model of ships, Thermometers (dry & wet), azimuth rings, life rafts, ship's clock, Aldis lamp, life jackets, survival equipments, SART, MOB markers, EPIRB, immersion suits, line throwing devices, first aid kit, life buoys, emergency radio, fire fighting equipments and many more.

LABORATORIES :- We have well equipped laboratories to meet the syllabus requirement of all our courses. We have separate laboratories for Physics, Chemistry and Electricals to facilitate the students experiment with practical applications.

WORKSHOP:- Our workshops provide excellent facilities on par with international standard that aid the students in best quality practical training. We provide training on the following areas: seamanship, machine shop, hot work, carpentry and plumbing. We also provide machining, use of hand and power tools, component assembly, disassembly and the use of fastening, maintenance of tools, heat treatment metals, welding & cutting and many more.

LIBRARY:- To enhance knowledge of the students, we are equipped with a collection of marine and technology related books and reference materials. In order to keep our students abreast of the latest advancements and development in marine field, we subscribe to a number of International Marine & Technology related journal, periodicals and newsletters.

BOATING & SWIMMING:- The academy has a vast and well maintained swimming pool. Our experienced and skillful teachers train the students in boating and swimming and educate them to deal with emergency situations onboard.

HOSTEL AND FOOD :- We provide separate hostel facilities for boys and girls and ensure a perfect ambience to make the students feel at home. We maintain strict discipline that results in shaping up the student’s career and at the same time enjoy the learning experience. Apart from the normal coaching and training hours, compulsory study hours are being implemented in order to facilitate the students to cover daily subjects and to complete assignments at hostel. We also help students to develop overall qualities of leadership and teamwork. We serve a variety of healthy and delicious dishes both vegetarian and Nonvegetarian to the students. Well trained and experienced Chefs cook tasty North Indian & south Indian and healthy multi-cuisine foods that match international standards in terms of both hygiene as well as quality.

MEDICAL :- we have regular tie up with reputed hospitals and provide medical assistance for the students. All students are required to get their medical examination done at the time of joining the institute. Besides, we also conduct health checkups on a regular basis to ensure the well-being of the students.

COMMUNICATION :- The entire campus is equipped with excellent communication facilities that help the students to carry out online based research activities to enhance their knowledge besides staying in touch with their parents and relatives. A Public Call office with Fax and photocopying facilities and a secure and high speed Internet connectivity is available round the clock for staff and candidates inside the campus.

We boast of having one of best faculty in the industry that comprises of highly qualified and well experienced personnel who are passionate about imparting knowledge at all levels. Our faculty members instill the kind of confidence in every student to shape up as responsible marine officers and accordingly guide them to achieve success besides imparting academic knowledge.

SHIP IN CAMPUS :- We constantly endeavour to bring quality maritime education and training programmes that enhances the knowledge of our students and serve the better the maritime industry. Understanding in detail the entire functioning of the ship is considered paramount to the maritime engineering training for an aspiring seafarer. Having a fully functional ship inside a campus provides a greater benefit to the maritime student community. The innovative idea of "Ship in Campus" , an alternative to ”On Board Training” , devised by D. G. of Shipping, Government of India, has been considered as boon by the maritime educational institutes that results in providing a live environment to the students. In tune with our vision of enhancing maritime education and training, we have entered in to an agreement with the Department of Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture, IIT, Kharagpur and are in the process of constructing “Ship in Campus" a fully functional live model ship in our SAMS campus.

Placement Cell

SAMS Chennai is having a well-equipped Placement cell. The cell undertakes various activities of training and grooming of students in terms of conducting mock interviews, Group Discussion sessions, resume preparation etc. Along with providing placement assistance to students. The placement cell also helps in managing industry interactions and industry relations.

Alumni Association

The Alumni Association is invited to make annual recommendations for the conferment of honorary degrees. For the most part, these are awarded to alumni.
Our alumni are important stakeholders in the future development of the Institute and the views of the alumni community are valued and frequently sought by the executive. This importance is reflected in our representation on the Institutions Board of Trustees.
